AEROBIC-a term used to describe an organism, that needs oxygen to survive
ANATOMY-the following diagrams show the external and internal anatomy of a fish.
AQUASCAPING-the art of using live plants to decorate the aquarium.
ANGEL FISH- (pterophyllum)which means winged leaf in greek,is a good description of this fish,a member of the cichlid family, they are very popular with beginers to the hobby, but they can quickly outgrow small community tanks, and become aggressive if overcrowded, avoid keeping angel fish with any kind of barbs,as they will nip the long trailing feelers of the angel fish,do not keep with neons or small terta's either as they will eat them! (i know this from personal experience)
ANTERIOR-the front end of the fish, the head, gills and pectoral fins.
AERATION-this allows oxygen to diffuse into the water and allows waste gases, such as carbon dioxide and amonia to diffuse out, usually done by way of an airstone.
ACTINIC LIGHTING-pure blue light used to replecate moonlight, dawn or dusk condition within the aquarium.
ADIPOSE FIN-a small fin located behind the dorsal finb and in front of the caudal fin.
A.B.C.- acidic binding capacity.
an example of an aquascaped tank, this set up will defenately need a good c02 supply, and a good dose of fertilizers to stay healthy.
B.I.D.K.A-british and international discus keepers association,an absolute must for any one with an interest in discus fish bidka
BIOLOGICAL FILTRATION-is the conversion of nitrogenous compounds, the media in the filter builds up a colony of good bacteria to break down waste.
BETTA-the betta or siamese fighting fish as it is also know (male betta pictured right)
BIOLUMINESCENCE-the ability for marine creatures to generate their own light in the abscence of any other light source.
BOTIIDS-a family of bottom dwelling river loaches,of the genus "botia"
BIOLOAD-waste produced by all organisms in the aquarium,if the filtration syatem is balanced, then it should be able to cope with the bioload,if not, nitrate levels will start to rise.
BIOTYPE-describes an aquarium with a specific species of fish,or decor and water chemistry from a defined area, right down to substrate and rocks, plants and bog wood-e.g a lake malawi set up or amazon brackish water aquarium.
CARAPACE-thhe upper part of the shell in a number of animals, including crustaceans such as carbs, lobsters and also of turtles and tortoises.
COLDWATER AQUARIUM-a set up that runs with no heaters added, for goldfish, ranchu's etc.
COMMUNITY AQUARIUM-a tank that houses fish of different species/genus,that live together and share that same requirements, popular with beginers to the hobby, due to the ease of care.
COMPLETE SET-UP-term used by the trade, means everything you need to start your aquarium with, usually comprises of a tank, hood, lights, heater and filter + other freebies like background, water treatments, etc.
CONDUCTIVITY-the measure of how much electrical current is carried in the water.
DAPHNIA-water fleas, tiny free swimming crusteastions,a favorite live food of many freshwater fish the picture on the right shows a DAPHNIA..
DEAD SPOT-an area in the aquarium with little or no water flow from the filter, this can lead to a build up of debris from waste and excrement.
DETRITUS-waste organic matter like uneated food & fish waste (faeces) that gathers on the bottom of the aquarium, and if left uncleaned can lead to reduced water quality and raised nitrate levels.
DISCUS-a cichlid fish of the genus "symhysodon",they are amazonian fish, and wid discus are only found in south america.known as the "king of the aquarium" they are a true personality fish which earned it's self the tag (wrongly in my opinion) a demanding and hard to care for fish.the like good clean soft water, nice and warm with a minimum temp of 28oc/82of.
DISEASES-entire books could be (and have been) written on fish diseases,i have included a seperate page on the most common fish diseases&treatment ,signs to look forand treatments.
DUMMY EGG SPOT-seen on many male cichlids, escpesially mouth brooders from lake malawi, they are coloured egg shaped spots on the anal fins. After laying the eggs the femal takes them into her mouth, the male then shows the egg spots, the female then opens her mouth again, thinking they are more eggs, the male then releases his sperm, thus fertilizing the egss already in the females mouth.
FILTRATION-a way to remove excess waste from the water in the aquarium, again entire books could be written on this subject alone, but it's basically divided into mechanical and biological filtration, and internal and external filters-all of which get their own inclusions in the "fishopedia".
FISH LEECHES-worm like parasites, that attach themselves to the skin of the fish.
FIN ROT-damaged & blood streaked fins that will errode if not treated (see fish disease section).
pictured left,an example of a fish with fin rot.
FOAM FRACTIONATION-a form of protein skimming, organic waste is removed from the water using a column of rising bubbles, the proteins stick to the air bubbles and rise and burst at the waters surface, and form a foam, thus discharging the waste.
F.O.W.L.R-an anacronym meaning fish only with live rock, refers to reef keeping/marine fish-where you would keep only fish and rock,no coral or crustations .
FRY-small but free swimming young of fish. (the image on the right, shows a male discus tending the brood of fry)
FUNGUS-an infection after the fish has sustained some sort of damage, looks like cotton wool like growths (see the fish disease section for details).
